Research description

Efficient energy storage and conversion processes rely to a large extent on properly designed, structured materials providing a platform for the chemistry but also the transport of gases and/or fluids. With the continuous developments in nanofabrication techniques, the realization of nanostructures specifically tailored to optimally facilitate certain desired chemical reactions has become feasible and offers promising scientific and commercial prospects. Advances in microreactor design can directly lead to more efficient and selective chemical processes, which require fewer raw materials, while minimizing the production of waste products. This opens the way to a more sustainable future. Challenges involve the inclusion of transport phenomena, chemical processes taking place at surfaces, and the transient and high-dimensional nature of the design problem. This project is collaboration between the Structural Optimization and Mechanics (SOM) group at 3ME and the Product and Process Engineering (PPE) group at the Chemical Engineering department.
